Why I'm Trekking to Everest Base Camp for PTSD Support!
I can't believe I'm sharing this, and to be honest, I'm feeling a bit scared and vulnerable. Most of you know me as someone who loves life, lives it to the fullest, laughs a lot, and celebrates all the little things. And while that's true, getting here has been a bit of a journey.
There was a time when I felt extremely disconnected from myself, my body, and the world around me. On the surface, everything seemed fine, but inside, I was not okay—emotionally numb and highly dysregulated. I downplayed my feelings, thinking, "It's not that bad," or "Maybe this is just what being an adult feels like." I thought, "It could have been worse; I survived; I didn't die." But survival isn't the same as truly living.
Understanding PTSD and CPTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) are conditions that can develop after experiencing or witnessing traumatic events. They can manifest through symptoms like hypervigilance, flashbacks, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, and feeling detached from oneself. It's important to note that trauma isn't always about BIG events. It can stem from childhood experiences, emotional neglect, ongoing stress, or unhealthy relationships…. PTSD is not a sign of weakness, and healing is not a linear process.
My Personal Connection
Working with individuals affected by trauma is a cause close to my heart—one I haven't often discussed openly. Having personally navigated these challenges, I understand the significant impact they can have on one's life. Reflecting on my own experiences, I wish I had known years ago the knowledge and tools I now share with my clients. Much of my healing journey involved self-discovery, resilience and a lot of trial and error. Today, it's a privilege to support others on their paths to recovery, witnessing their growth and renewed sense of wellbeing.
The Everest Base Camp Trek: A Metaphor for Healing
This year, I've decided to take on a new challenge: trekking to Everest Base Camp to raise funds for PTSD. The journey to Everest Base Camp is not just a physical challenge; it's a metaphor for the healing process. The trek involves navigating diverse terrains, facing unpredictable weather, and pushing through physical and mental barriers. Similarly, the path to healing from trauma requires determination, facing fears, and continuous effort. Both journeys are filled with obstacles, but each step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to the goal.
